In 1953, a young and relatively unknown artist called Robert Rauschenberg approached a famous artist Willem de Kooning and managed to gain permission to erase the artist’s work and made a new artwork titled “Erased de Kooning Drawing”.
Artist Kaori Homma will introduce a method of creative process used by contemporary artists such as Richard Serra, Robert Rauchenberg, John Stezaker and Sophia Hulten. In this workshop, you are invited to journey through a creative process by working within existing conditions. Rather than focusing on your own creative ideas or artistic skillset, you will be given a chance to examine the process of making in itself to consider what it takes to transform a thing.
This workshop includes an illustrated talk about historical and contemporary artists’ practice, a group discussion and a practical collage workshop. By the end of the session, each participant will take home several pieces which might surprise you. You do not need to have any prior experience in art, or an artistic skillset to join this workshop. It is aimed at adults but children over 12 years old can join with responsible adult supervision.
Number of Participants: Max 15
Age: The workshop is aimed at adults
Cost per participant: £7
This afternoon workshop involves painting outdoors at the lake with inks and watercolour medium. Please bring water and suitable clothing for outdoor messy painting. We’ll be sitting on the grass looking out over the lake so please bring a fold up stool or cushion if you need one. The workshop is designed for adults, under 16s are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
Cezanne famously said painting from nature is not copying the object; it is realising one’s sensations. In this way, our workshop will consider painting as a means to realise our sensibilities towards nature. Alastair will lead the group through a few basic techniques in ink and watercolour painting, using expressive mark making and loose applications of paint. It’s going to get messy! You’ll need a 1 litre bottle of water and a cup for dirty water. He’ll provide everything else including paper, board and paints.
This workshop is weather permitting so we will let you know if plans need to change or in case of cancellation. We will use the email address you provide at the time of booking for any updates.
Number of Participants: Max 20
Age: The workshop is aimed at adults, children under 16 must be supervised
Cost per participant: £6
Venue: Meet at Crow Park, the fields overlooking the lake near the theatre (what3words /// weary.wisely.guarded)
