Here we see that James is not merely a “practical” letter written to Christians in general, but a penetrating analysis and treatment of an undiagnosed spiritual disease among believers who are experiencing significant difficulties.
James begins to prise the lid off the can of worms, exposing the disease beneath the symptoms.
Here teachers and speech are seen to be particularly important in the disease process, either for good or for ill.
The heart of the disease is exposed, and God’s gracious solution is displayed.
Believers are urged to swallow the medicine themselves, and to help one another swallow it.

We encounter the Holy Spirit from the first to the last chapters of the Bible. From the beginning he is described as ‘the Spirit of God’ (Genesis 1:2). But what does this description mean? In this seminar we will survey the Bible’s teaching on his divine identity as the third person of the Trinity, his personal nature, and his multifaceted work, especially in the Old Testament.
The apostle Paul says that ‘Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him’ (Romans 8:9). But what does it mean to say that the Spirit is ‘the Spirit of Christ’? We often think mainly of the work that he does in us and forget what we will reflect on in this seminar: the Holy Spirit is first and foremost the Spirit who worked in Christ.
The Day of Pentecost was filled with drama–the sound of a rushing wind, tongues of fire, people hearing the apostle preach the gospel in their own languages, and thousands of conversions. Everyone was asking the question, ‘What does this mean?’ (Acts 2:12). In this seminar we will explore the content and significance of Simon Peter’s famous answer.
One of the church’s greatest theologians wrote that ‘Spirit of adoption’ is the ‘first’ title of the Spirit. That is not true chronologically, and this description appears rarely in the Bible. So is it really so significant? In this seminar we will explore this role of the Spirit and its practical importance by examining its use in Paul’s letters as he echoes the teaching of Jesus.
The key to your spiritual growth in Christ could be the Christian sat next to you (and you theirs!). In today’s culture we tend to make spiritual transformation far too individualistic, often neglecting the deeper implications of the vision of love laid out by Jesus. As we begin this seminar series we will explore the kind of relationships that God uses…if only we will make ourselves available to His purposes. Come and join us for the adventure of exploring being used by God in your everyday relationships.
We are called the Body of Christ, the ‘incarnation’ or en-fleshing of Jesus’ activity on the earth. This means that we are the way – dependent on the Holy Spirit- that God’s grace and love are pressed into this world. But so often there is like an ‘invisible barrier’ that stops us having the kind of relationships that God intends us to have –insecurity, fear, and other dynamics hinder close friendships. Come and join us as we explore both the barriers and the solutions that God has provided for us.
In this third part of the seminar series – having explored the vision of God’s intention for our close relationships, and addressed the barriers to getting there – we now continue to look into the life-transforming ways that humans are called to bring God’s love into relationships. A love that is not a sappy ‘niceness’, superficial and without depth, but a love that is deep, rich and utterly transformative. What does it mean to live in communities of grace? How can an understanding of Jesus’ love reframe the way we view the people around us?
In this seminar we wrap up the week with an exploration of how we invest our love. Jesus called us to Love, yet in His time on earth was limited in his capacity to love (believe it or not!)- he didn’t touch every need, he didn’t address every person. Similarly, we are limited in our capacity and, like Jesus, we need to focus our love and be clear about how we steward the influence we have in our friendships. Come and join us and let us a set you on a path that will inspire and reshape the way you view the calling to ‘go and make disciples’.
We rightly long for churches which help us love the Lord and provide supportive fellowship. We have great expectations of what the Church should be, but we experience many frustrations with what it is. Sometimes, going along feels like a chore. Looking at the Book of Acts, we will ask what we should realistically expect from our churches and what that means for our walk with the Lord.
Our church families can experience wonderful community and fellowship, but also complicated conflicts. At their worst, churches can deeply hurt us and have been the means of horrific abuse. Some people are tempted to abandon church altogether. Why does the church seem to fail constantly? How should we deal with the complexities of church life in all its seasons? Is there ever a right time to leave our church family?
The Scriptures are described as “nourishing,” in 1 Tim 4:6, and this seminar will explore the implications of this: how we can enjoy; grow; and be transformed through listening to the Lord speak through his Word. We’ll share practical ideas, think what works well for different personalities, and consider the value both of reading plans and flexibility, so we make the most of these precious opportunities to commune with our Lord.
Paul urges us to pray all types of prayers for all people because this is good and pleases God our Saviour (1 Tim 2:1-3). We’ll explore the centrality of prayer in Paul’s experience; why prayer is so good and pleasing; and how varying our prayers to include “petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving,” (1 Tim 2:1) helps us to avoid empty cliches and cultivate honest, heartfelt prayer.
How does a desire for ongoing transformation in Christ continue to change us and all we do and how we see all of life… even into our 90s? How will we not lose heart because of the lack of change we’ve seen in ourselves, or in other people, or in situations we’re involved with. How does living with the hope of our ultimate transformation change today and every day? – Session 1

Every parent wants theirs to be a secure family: Children can flourish, difficulties can be overcome and new challenges can be attempted with confidence. The Christian parent knows that the real foundation to total security is Jesus Christ. Come along to hear more of this security and how to lean into him when everything feels unstable. This is the better story where guilt and fear can be laid to rest.
Are you the parent who feels like they have got Christian family life sorted? Then this seminar is not for you! For the rest of us we need to know that our hope for tomorrow rests in what God is doing today in our family. Through the confusion, the struggle and the failure the Lord can work powerfully by His Spirit in our homes and churches.
This session explores how we engage in conversations about the importance of life – especially the beginning of life. Peter will look at how we think biblically about what is means to be human while Dawn considers how we can respond with God’s heart, when faced with a woman or family experiencing pregnancy crisis. Join with us as we acknowledge the painful reality of crises situations and seek to imagine what “better” could look like for both lives.
This session explores how we can engage in conversations about the end of life. Peter will look at the current debate around assisted suicide, what is likely to happen legally and the space this opens for profound conversations about life and death. Dawn will help us think about navigating conversations about life being ended in the womb and how we better support both lives.
Apart from giving to church and mission, how do I look different from my non-Christian friends? Am I living a distinctive life of love for God and my neighbour in the way I buy clothes and food, rent a flat or take out a mortgage? Money is dangerous – it’s deceptive, wants to own you, and can destroy your faith … yet we rarely talk about it. Let’s change that!
When churches teach ‘money’, it’s usually about giving. But if I’m living life for Jesus, shouldn’t that transform my approach to wages and overtime, choosing Waitrose or Lidl, and how much and where I save for that rainy day? Do I think that God has my eternity provided for, but he’s forgotten about my retirement? And what about sponsorship?
In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul talking about the church, says that the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are the ones we cannot do without. The parts we think are less important, we treat with special honour. In this seminar, we will be exploring how the church can be transformed when we encourage and equip people with learning disabilities to play their part in the body of Christ.

It can be difficult to discern how best to approach short-term missions, especially when we are entering contexts where we neither fully understand the culture nor speak the local language. Yet, many of those we send on mission today are engaging in placements of less than two years—raising important questions about the effectiveness and purpose of such efforts.
During our time together, we will take an honest look at both the potential and the pitfalls of this increasingly common approach to global mission. Together, we’ll reflect on how we can engage in short-term mission and consider the role it can play in forming the next generation of globally minded disciples of Christ.

Enhancing your Workplace Witness. Ministry in everyday work is much more than verbal witness but for many it’s the area they feel least confident in. The key is to build trusting relationships. And critical that is the ability to make the most of everyday conversations that are ‘full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone’ (Colossians 4:6). Come explore some simple ways to do that and share challenges and ideas with others in your sector.

The theme for the Convention this year is Transformed to help us consider the ways that we have been, will be and are being Transformed by Christ and his Spirit. In 19-24s, we’ll particularly focus on the ways that we are being made more like Christ, through the transforming work of the Spirit.
In these sessions we’ll be focusing on the Fruit of the Spirit (as listed in Galatians 5), and thinking through what it looks like to cultivate and display that fruit in our lives. Doors open at 9.30am for a 10am start.
Monday – Introduction to the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5)
We’ll begin the week with an introduction to the idea of the fruit of the Spirit, and in particular, the fact that it is fruit and not ‘fruits’! Spiritual fruit and spiritual gifts are not the same – we shouldn’t expect that one of us will have love, and another gentleness, and so on, but rather, that each of us has been given all of the fruit, as each of us has received the Spirit.
Tuesday – Love, Joy and Peace
Working through what Paul meant by the words ‘love’, ‘joy’ and ‘peace’, and considering how they ought to be seen and lived out in our work/studies, friendships and family, romantic relationships, church life, and evangelism.
Wednesday – Keswick Lecture (Main Tent)
We will join the Keswick Lecture in the Main Tent.
Thursday – Patience, Kindness and Goodness
Working through what Paul meant by the words ‘patience’, ‘kindness’ and ‘goodness’, and considering how they ought to be seen and lived out in our work/studies, friendships and family, romantic relationships, church life, and evangelism.
Friday – Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control
Working through what Paul meant by the words ‘faithfulness’, ‘gentleness’ and ‘self-control’, and considering how they ought to be seen and lived out in our work/studies, friendships and family, romantic relationships, church life, and evangelism.
