15 Sep 2009: His sovereignty: my sufficiency
One of the benefits of having had a little boy at home, my grandson, is that you get to watch children’s films with a good conscience! One of my old heroes, Spiderman, has recently had a new lease of life in a Hollywood film of that name. Do you know how he became Spiderman? He got bitten by a radioactive spider and since then he has been hanging around everywhere! In other words, the effect of that bite – sure, I know it is fiction! – is that he has powers, abilities and capacities that he never had before! If I can put it reverently, when I am bitten by this Lord of glory, the Supreme Governor of his church, and the Lord of the universe, when I am in touch with him, when Christ is in me, then I have abilities and resources I did not have before. Jesus is for me, with me and in me. His sovereignty is my sufficiency. Christ the Lord of glory, by his Spirit, in you! We need to speak less about our problems and inadequacies, and so much more of the sufficiency of the One who has all the power in the universe to present us and all his church, holy and without blemish before him, free from accusation. From ‘King of Heaven, Lord of Earth’
