I think it was Alec Motyer who told the story of a Japanese Christian who was a thief before he was converted to Christ. After his conversion, he visited a church and saw, written on the wall, the Ten Commandments. And one commandment leapt out at him: ‘Thou shalt not steal.’ But now he saw it in a new way. Not, ‘Thou shalt NOT steal,’ but ‘Thou SHALT not steal.’ What had formerly been a condemning precept was now a life-giving promise, ‘Thou shalt not steal.’ So in Christ the precepts of the law have become promises to the believer, bringing the liberty of obedience.
